Jamaaladeen Tacuma Quartet featuring Tyshawn Sorey | Sat June 13 | 7PM & 9:30PM

June 13, 2026 until June 13, 2026

Celebrate Black Music Month at South Jazz Kitchen with a landmark musical event honoring two icons of the Philadelphia spirit: the 70th birthday of legendary bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and the centennial of the titan John Coltrane. In this special engagement, the Jamaaladeen Tacuma Quartet featuring Pulitzer-winning percussionist Tyshawn Sorey presents a transcendent reimagining of Tacuma’s storied repertoire and selections from his internationally acclaimed "Coltrane Configurations" quartet which made its debut 20 years ago at iconic jazz club Zanzibar Blue.  Moving beyond the avant-garde, this performance shines a spotlight on the melodic heart of the music, transforming signature bass lines into deep, velvet grooves and harmonies. Joined by Yesseh Ali on soaring saxophone and Key Hutch on atmospheric guitar, this elite ensemble blends the sophisticated improvisational soul of the Philly jazz scene with an upscale supper club vibe. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness history meeting the future of the groove in the heart of Philadelphia. This event is made possible in collaboration with Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Series.
