Adam Faulk, a jazz pianist from Greater Boston, transitioned from violin to viola, drawing on his experience from the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Khary Abdul Shaheed is a percussionist focused on West African and Afro-Cuban drumming, emphasizing tone and technique.
John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music.
Born and raised in North Carolina, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia after high school, where he immersed himself in the local jazz scene, studied music, and served in the Navy. He made his professional debut in 1945. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was one of the players at the forefront of free jazz.
