ALTHEA RENE | THURS FEB 19 | 6:30 & 9:00PM | presented by UNSCRIPTED JAZZ
February 19, 2026 until February 19, 2026
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Althea René began her musical journey at age four and studied classical music at Howard University. Inspired by her father, Dezie McCullers of Motown’s original Funk Brothers, she developed a signature soul-jazz style and is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier improvisational jazz flutists. Grammy-nominated saxophonist Najee calls her the “Maceo of the flute.”
Her 2013 release In the Flow made history with the first flute-led single to reach #1 on the Billboard and Smooth Jazz charts. A former Wayne County Deputy Sheriff, Althea René is now a full-time performing artist, Altus Flutes endorser, author, and 2021 Presidential Volunteer Service Award recipient.
